I just read an article about the court case regarding the Pledge of Allegiance having "one nation under God" cut from it. Two words, folks: SIMPLY OUTRAGEOUS.

The whole premise of the case is absurd. A father takes the case of his daughter being uncomfortable about saying "under God" in the pledge to court - but the mother claims that the daughter feels none of the discomfort that the father claims. And then it turns into a custody battle. My theory? The dad wants attention and thinks that by riding a political issue, he can get it. A bunch of CRUD, my friends. That's what it is.

I think we need to rethink this whole thing. What is the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance? It is not meant to be a religious oath. Rather, its purpose is to give citizens a chance to commit to this country. Ask anyone who wants to be a citizen or is a new U.S. citizen - do you think it bothers them to have "under God" in the pledge? Most of them will tell you no! They WANT to be here. They WANT to adhere to this country and its ideals. They don't get all caught up in the technicalities of the Pledge - they find it's true meaning.

Why do we have to let lawyers mess things up by zeroing in on words instead of meaning? We are too freaking spoiled to even appreciate what it means to live in this country. We forget that there are people out there defending our lives so we can go to school and work and watch the TV programs that we want. Instead, we take it all for granted. Some people who REALLY took it for granted got bored and decided to scrutinize every "the" and "a" and "is" in every sentence instead of understanding full sentences. And they make a good deal of money off of it.

Thankfully, Congress has some sense. 99 out of 100 senators support the Pledge as it is. At least our lawmakers know what is really important. Hey, Mr. Newdow (the guy who brought the case to court) can go right ahead and say "one nation under God except for me and all the other atheists who think I'm cool and are giving me money to say this" if he wants to. It is a free country - if only this guy REALLY understood that.

And all Sistah T has to say is... God Bless America. For always.
