Truly green

Yesterday was Earth Day. ::yawn:: While I have no problems with people trying to conserve water, or energy, or brain waves, I find Hollywood's attempt to be green HILARIOUS. Bunch o' spoiled city people just trying to be cool by buying "organic" food, clothing, and cars. Are you serious??

Look - you want to be truly green? Let me put you out on a farm in Indiana. You wouldn't make it ONE DAY. First of all, you don't know where Indiana is. Second of all, you wouldn't know the first thing to do if you had to harvest your own food or make your own clothes. (You can't tell a cow from a horse, much less a corn plant from a soybean plant.) Third - you'll never survive on solar power in the Midwest. (Do you know how much cloud cover we get here? Indiana isn't even the worst in that regard...)

I'm gonna have to quote my dad on this one: "Wanna be organic? Then eat your own @$#%!"

Get real, people. You think you're being smart and eco-friendly if you buy your special clothes that have the special dyes which don't have chemicals?? I hate to break it to you, but you are FULL of chemicals. Water (wait, I mean, dihydrogen monoxide). Salt. Nitrogen. Oxygen. Go ahead and save the earth - but PLEASE don't make yourselves and others stupider in the process. And carbon dioxide is a WHOLE different issue. Want to limit CO2 emissions? Stop breathing out and stop passing gas. (If you find a way to do this and remain alive, you've won yourself a trip to Stockholm.)

The next one I have to address is the car issue. Is the hybrid really the way to go for saving the earth? No. The process to create that car uses more energy than it saves, people. And it's not cost-effective - chances are you won't be able to recover the costs that you spent on the car with the gas money you supposedly save.

And how do you expect me to do my job if you want me to drive less? You realize that my counterparts and I help save lives, right? And part of that includes driving (or in some cases, flying) around the state to do so. And no, hiring more people does not solve the problem - you would actually end up spending more money and using more energy.

You know what this whole "green" movement is? A fad. It's just to make you more popular, folks. Why do you think people are trying to out-do each other's greenness? What part of that makes sense?

Again, I completely agree that we should try to limit our waste as much as possible. But I have very little respect for most environmentalists because they usually don't present any accurate data (if they even present ANY data). It's all about hype and "cool points", and that bothers me. This is no different than those slap bracelets in the 80s and the grunge look in the 90s. Quit sending celebrities to Congress to testify on being "green" and bring in people who actually have the facts.

Whatever you do, just keep this whole green movement and conservation effort separate from the sublimation process that apparently affects the brain cells of celebrities. Is that so much to ask?

I have to agree with you. Every once and a while someone will ask me what I think about recycling or hybrid cars and I tell them both are a waste(neglecting aluminum cans). The only way to help the environment is to consume less. It helps the environment far more to by a small little Hyundai Accent then it does to buy a prius.

It is difficult to fault people for caring, even if it is a miss-informed kind. Regardless of if they do it because it is cool or not this fad is much better then the conspicuous consumption of the 90's. Anything is better then large SUV's and McMansions...

well, I can't speak on the subject of SUVs since I'm required to drive one (how else do you haul around a 25 lb programmer and other medical equipment in order to save lives? believe me, a little Honda Civic won't cut it). but outside of that, I understand what you're saying - that even if this is a fad, at least it's a helpful fad. regardless, I still have issues with people following a fad without thinking about what it is first!!!
